ACTIVITIES:

Have pupils open their PB at P/20. Ask, What is the title of this reading? (King Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Al-Saud) How many para graphs are there? (three) How many lines are there ? (41)

1.                  S read aloud the first sentence of the first paragraph (Abdul Aziz was only eleven years old in 1891 when his family was forced to leave Riyadh for Kuwait.). Ask, What do you think the first paragraph it about? to elicit, e-g-, Abdul Aziz's early life.

2.                  Repeat step 2 for the first sentence of the second paragraph (But Riyadh was only the beginning of Abdul Aziz's great adventure.) to elicit, e-g-, Abdul Aziz's later life. Repeat step 2 for the first sentence of the 3rd para (King Abdul Aziz is remembered as a great and fair leader with a strong faith in Islam.) to elicit, e-g- What people remember about Abdul Aziz or Abdul Aziz's character.

3.                  Ask, What year is written in line I of the reading? Elicit the answer (1891) and write it on the board. Ask, What is the next year in the reading ? Elicit the answer (1902) and write it on the board. Repeat this for the other years and write them in a list on the board. Point to the first year in the list on the board and ask, What happened in 1891? Where did the family go? Elicit, e-g-, They left Riyadh and went to Kuwait. Do the same for the other seven years in the list on the board, e-g-,

4.                  Write the following questions on the board : ( S have 5.m to answer the Q’s on P/20-21)

What happened between 1932 and 1953? (the modernization of Saudi Arabia)

How much did Abdul Aziz sleep? (six hours a day)

How did the man recognize Abdul Aziz? (because of his generosity)

5.                  Ø introduce modernization, the process of making something more modem. introduce: Ø  generosity, the noun from the adjective generous.

6.                  S take  (5.m) to read the passage silently and underline the unknown words. Introduce the

following words only:  Ø caravan  (line 2): the picture across pages 20 and 21 shows a caravan, a group of people travelling together, usually by camel across a desert. Ø sadly (line 3): the adverb from sad. Abdul Aziz was not happy to leave his home. Ø take back (line 5): to take something which someone took from you, here Riyadh. Ø reconquer (line 6):to take back and control. Ø Najdi (line 6): the adjective from Najd.  Ø Turk (line 11): a Turkish person, a person from Turkey. Ø: free from (line 13): without or no longer having. The east of the country no longer had Turkish rulers. Ø: rule (line 13): the noun from rule, meaning  control. Ø Sultan (line 13): a title, similar to King. Ø nation (line 17): a country, a state. Ø: physically (line 25): of the body, not the mind. Ø: ride up (line 32): up means as far as Abdul Aziz. He rode up to him because he wanted to speak to him. Ø: pass by (line 34): to come or go past.
